December, 1996: A UNIX Bigot's Reaction to Windows NT
Joe VanAndel, who works at the National Center for Atmospheric Research
on data acquisition and radar control systems, described his reactions to
Windows NT from the perspective of a UNIX bigot with 17 years experience.
He described NT as a 32-bit multiprocessor operating system that is
becoming popular in the marketplace because it runs on high-end PC
software and also provides the ability to run many Windows 95
programs. Joe asked the question why anyone with years of experience
would want to use a programming language with the word BASIC in it--
and he proceeded to show some of the power of Visual Basic in terms
of integrating productivity applications-- such as spreadsheets--
