The next meeting of the Front Range UNIX Users
Group (FRUUG) will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Monday, January 14th.
Modulo the hype, .NET is a new platform from Microsoft,
based on virtual machine akin to Java's. This engine, the Common Language
Infrastructure (CLI), defines an instruction set, an object type system,
file formats, etc. The CLI differs from the JVM in important respects:
- it is programming language neutral
- it is intended for native execution, primarily
- it has a richer type system
- it has both safe and unsafe instructions
- it supports code versioning and authentication
Above the virtual machine, there are class libraries with
support that extend to XML and SOAP. The C# programming language, which
sits about half-way between Java and C++, is the closest fit to the machine.
The presentation will discuss the CLI, compilers that target
the machine, and the consequences building and deploying .NET applications,
the standardization of .NET by ECMA, and standards-based open-source implementations
of .NET.
For anyone who doesn't know Tom Cargill yet, his bio can
be found at

This meeting will be in room 123 of the CU Academic Computing
Center building at Arapahoe and Marine Streets in Boulder. Marine St intersects
Arapahoe at 38th St; the Computing Center is on the southwest corner.
We had a great turnout and a great interest in our meeting on
smart homes in December. As a result, we've arranged with Gary Koenig
to give us the cook's tour of one of the smart homes that he's
configured in the course of his work for McStain Homes.
The tour will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday January 19 at a
model home in Lafayette.
We need to know how many people plan to attend, and given
that it's a Saturday, we have no idea how to predict
attendance. If you plan to come, please sign up on
our site at
www.fruug.org/splash.
Slides for both Gary Koenig's and Jim Elliott's talks are
posted in our meeting archive at
www.fruug.org/Archive/2001-12/writeup.html
Notes and resources from our past meetings are available
at
www.fruug.org/mtgarchive/index.html.
Meetings that we are planning for the next few months include
the following:
-
Managing your Storage Area Network
-
DNS Update
Our FRUUG library sponsors are reminding us that they are
providing us with review copies of their books in order to get,
well, reviews of them. In order for us to continue to receive
their generous donations, we need to start giving them feedback
on their books. If you check out a FRUUG book, please plan
to write a paragraph on what you thought of the book, or point
out areas that you particularly liked or didn't like. They
don't have to be polished reviews for publication-- they
are reviews for them to improve their books. If you can
manage to put a few words together, please send them (along
with the title and publisher of the book) to gaede at fruug.org
and we'll send it along to the appropriate people.
Softpro books has donated a $20 gift certificate for a lucky
FRUUG member; they're at Baseline and Foothills in Boulder. Enter the drawing
at
www.fruug.org/library/giveaway.html/.
You may check out books using your business card as your
library card; you must be on the membership list to check books out. Books
are due at the meeting following the one in which they are checked out.
Remember that your FRUUG membership entitles you to discounts
on your book orders from both New Riders Publishing and O'Reilly &
Associates; refer to the FRUUG Web site for details.
